An act is said to be ultra vires or beyond the powers of a corporation when they are not authorized by its charter or articles of incorporation or by the statute under which the corporation is created. Similarly, a statute is said to be beyond the powers of the legislative body, such as the provincial or the Dominion parliament, when it is beyond its powers pursuant to the British North America Act.
